In Memory of David and Helen Mitchell

It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Mr. David Mitchell, along with his beloved wife, Helen, on March 12, 2024. Mr. Mitchell was a pillar to his community of Crescent Township, and his sense of civic responsibility was without limitation. He began serving on the Moon Township Municipal Authority Board of Directors in 2000 as our Crescent Township representative. This was after many years of service on the Board of the Crescent South Heights Municipal Authority, which merged with MTMA at that time. Mr. Mitchell led the efforts for this merger in order to address the environmental and regulatory needs of his community in the most cost-effective manner for the customers of both Crescent and Moon Townships. In his continued service on the MTMA Board of Directors, Dave was an integral part of our Board of Directors and contributed to many of our accomplishments. He was dedicated to fiduciary responsibility, quality service to our customers, and commitment to neighbors and community. Dave Mitchell will be greatly missed by all of us here at the Authority who not only had the pleasure of working with him, but had the honor of calling him a friend.  Dave Mitchell will be forever remembered by all of us as an exceptional man in every respect.

Your MTMA Water Supply

The MTMA works diligently to provide excellent water service to our customers at the lowest long-term cost. MTMA supplies water to nearly all the 27,000 residents and business of Moon Township. This includes water supply to the Pittsburgh International Airport, Robert Morris University and the three military bases located in our area.

The MTMA water treatment plant received significant renovation from 2017 through 2019. This state-of-the-art facility consistently meets all requirements and provides a reliable source of safe, good tasting water. The treatment facility receives raw water from wells and from the Ohio River. We have emergency water supply interconnects with four neighboring water systems to enhance the reliability of both the MTMA and the neighboring systems. MTMA has five finished water storage tanks and over 145 miles of waterlines. MTMA has a well-maintained water supply and the lowest water rate in the area. This has been achieved by charging adequate water service rates to maintain the water supply system and then making strategic, cost-effective investments to renew aging system components.

Upcoming major projects include the construction of a new pipeline from the wells and river intake to the treatment plant, painting of water storage tanks, rebuilding of our largest water supply well, and replacement of older waterlines.

In recent years, all significant projects were managed by the MTMA and many were also constructed by MTMA staff to save money. MTMA strives to be a good steward of the funds our customers pay for water service. The MTMA water supply is a significant community asset.

Your MTMA Wastewater System

The MTMA works diligently to provide excellent wastewater service to our customers at the lowest, long-term cost. MTMA provides sanitary sewer service to nearly all the 30,000 residents and business of Moon Township, Crescent Township, and South Heights Borough. MTMA also provides wholesale wastewater services to large areas of Robinson Township, North Fayette Township, Findlay Township and the Pittsburgh International Airport. MTMA owns and operates the Leonard Nary Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) at Montour Run, and the Flaugherty Run WWTP.

MTMA and the Coraopolis Water and Sewer Authority jointly own the Riverview Sanitary Sewer Authority (RSA) WWTP. The RSA serves a large area of Moon Township and the Borough of Coraopolis. MTMA owns and maintains eleven sewage pumping stations and 215 miles of sanitary sewer mains.

In recent years, MTMA forces have performed significant renewal of our treatment plants and major sewage pumping stations. MTMA is nearly complete with a 12-year effort to renew approximately 80 miles of vitrified clay sewer. This effort was undertaken to provide reliable service and reduce future maintenance and operating costs.

All significant renewal projects were managed by MTMA staff, many were even performed by MTMA staff to save money. MTMA has well maintained facilities and competitive sewer service rates. This has been achieved by charging adequate sewer service rates to maintain the wastewater system and also make strategic cost-effective investments to renew aging system components. MTMA strives to be a good steward of the funds our customers pay for wastewater services. The MTMA wastewater system is a significant community asset.
